...we answer God's call - to discover and make known - the love of the Heart of Jesus...

Newcastle Community

The Society of the Sacred Heart has been in Fenham for over one hundred years. Having first arrived in Newcastle in 1903, in response to a request from the local Bishop to train young women to become primary school teachers, the Society then founded both a school and teacher-training college in Fenham two years later. Although the training college closed in 1985, when the structure of teacher training in Britain was altered, the Sacred Heart Primary and High schools have continued to educate local children from 1905 until today.

Since its arrival in Fenham, the shape and ministry of the Society in the local area has changed and adapted according to the needs of the times. At present, there is one sister living in Cedar Road and five of us living in Wingrove Road. In addition to our own individual work and ministries, shown on the individual profiles, as a community we live out a joint ministry of hospitality, in which we invite others to share our experience of community. We do this through running a reflection group for young women, a prayer group for local parishoners and by welcoming women to visit who are discerning a call to religious life.

The various local and provincial events that we are involved in mean that our community life is fairly active. However, we remain rooted together through our community prayer and by sharing a daily meal. Each evening during the week we spend time together in prayer, meditating on a piece of scripture. On one of these evenings we have a longer reflection period, in which we take time to look back over the week and notice where God has been near us during the week and to see how He is working in our lives.
