...we answer God's call - to discover and make known - the love of the Heart of Jesus...

We met the human face of Parliament.

For me the highlight of this Lobby was meeting with Lyn Brown our MP. There were five of us meeting her, 3 Anglican Franciscan brothers who live and work in Plaistow, and Carol and I. We met the human side of Parliament in Lyn. We spoke to her of the object of the Lobby to raise awareness at the next G8 meeting in June of the hunger in the world and the fact that there is enough if there is global partnership and co-operation about malnutrition.

Lyn was concerned with this, but we spoke mainly of the poverty and hardship in Newham, of the need for food banks and the fact that the Government speaks as if these are extra and not really necessary. She was concerned with all the issues of our people and the struggle to get answers. I met a woman with a real heart and frustration that she can do so little - but one who promised to do all she could.

God is at work in the world. We are making a difference and we are changing the way things are. I got such a buzz from knowing that so many of us were there, including around 8 novices from different Congregations, including Katie, Siobhan and myself. We went with some rscj to lend our voices to the myriad of others who want to see an end to world hunger. One in 8 people go hungry in our world: that’s wrong. Nearly two million children die every year from starvation due to malnutrition: that is wrong. We need to put an end to things now. There is enough food in the world to feed everyone but we need to change the way some systems work: to bring about these changes by getting the government to listen to the statistics and understand that tax evasion needs to be stamped out; that we should not allow businesses to hide behind ‘Shell Corporations’ so as to not declare their taxes. I felt so proud to hold aloft the banner for the Society of the Sacred Heart, RSCJ. I felt sure that Sophie was happy that we were there and she would have been right there in the thick of things, holding that banner and chanting at the top of her voice: Enough Food for Everyone IF...
