Pauline (not her real name) is Belgian and comes to me for weekly English lessons. She did not enjoy school, and left at 14. Now as an adult, she is discovering, perhaps for the first time, that she is capable of learning and that it can be fun. “Yes, I know that” she says triumphantly when I ask her a question. She does homework and takes it seriously. She is more at home in a one to one situation than she would be in a more formal class.
Pauline lives with many problems; health problems in her family, difficult family relationships, money worries. When we meet, we always have a laugh, and she is able to share what is going on in her life. For me, it is simply a question of being there and listening. It is, in a small way, trying to be the compassionate Heart of Christ in the world.
